Continuing with the Speed Option series. We will examine using GT as a false key and different ways to run speed option utilizing stretch/outside zone blocking.
Blocking Scheme below is GT. The GT blocking is away from the read side serving as a false key. As a play caller or scouting, it is mindful to see how the line backers will flow/read GT blocking. The biggest advantage is if the “W” Linebacker will flow to the GT side, that leaves only the Safety or no one to pick up the running back for pitch responsibility.
Below example is outside zone away from the read side. Much like the GT away you are using flow to counter the defense. The Left Tackle’s responsibility is climbing vertical to pick up the “W” linebacker incase the QB decides to keep it.
Below is an example of outside zone Load Option. This is out of spread formation. The H wide receiver is looking to seal off the closest Line Backer. If the LB plugs then H climbs to third level threat (F/S). This isn’t the most opportunistic formation to block out of. The biggest disadvantage is you can’t account for both LB’ers. If both Line backers plug a run lane they can get to the QB and kill the play. The “lock” tag is speaking to the left tackle to be locked on the left End. Read key is the Right OLB.
Example below is outside zone Load Option. This is more of an advantageous formation because all the defenders in the box and playside are accounted for. There is only one defender responsible for 2 offensive run threats being the QB and the RB. This is a more prevalent defensive alignment for base 4-3, but this is still large assumption on how the defense will align. But nevertheless, the same question remains. Who has the QB?
I hope you got something out of the article. I appreciate you all reading! If you are new to our substack, know we won’t just go over just option. We will go over everything offense and eventually our defensive system and special teams. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any question or recommendations.
